What I Packed for Racing the HT550 - Ultra Bikepacking the Highland Trail by Jenny Tough
See what's in my packs for my HT550 race, finished in joint second place in 4 days and 23 hours. Featuring Lola the labradoodle.
The Highland Trail explores 550 miles of the most rugged and remote terrain in the Scottish Highlands. The route features world class singletrack and dirt roads with stunning views throughout, but you must put in some serious effort to reap the rewards. The most impressive sections will require some hike-a-bike for even the most proficient mountain bikers. The HT550 annual race is one of the OG ultra cycling unsupported events, and considered one of the hardest races in the calendar.

Bikepacking the Zanskar
Просмотров 3 тыс.7 месяцев назад
The Zanskar Mountains have held so much fascination for me. Some of the tallest peaks on earth, almost cut off from the populous country below. The peace is so intense that I can instantly understand why this place calls serene souls. Our climb went up to nearly 5000m, the highest I've ever taken a gravel bike! Route on Komoot.
Solitude in the Altai Fastpacking in Mongolia by Jenny Tough
Просмотров 4 тыс.10 месяцев назад
A one-week walk(run)-about fastpacking journey in the beautiful Altai Mountains of Western Mongolia. I carried minimalist kit - just a basic bivvy and some dry food - and navigated mainly by sight/compass, as the majority of trails were not marked on the map. The solitude on this journey was completely remarkable, and gave me so much space to connect with the area.
Boundaries - Bikepacking Oman's Al Hajar Mountains

On my recent gravel bikepacking journey in the Al Hajar mountains, I was faced constantly with objections like: "you can't go there - it's too hard!". The boundaries of your comfort zone are unique to you, and only you can decide where you'll go. Bikepacking Colombia - Gravel Riding Across the Colombian Andes
Просмотров 12 тыс.2 года назад
I spent two weeks gravel riding the length of the Colombian Andes, finding stunning climbs, a mix of tarmac and gravel, and exploring this incredibly beautiful and colourful country. Colombia is a cycling paradise - if bikes are your thing, I can't recommend this country enough! You can see the route here: www.komoot.com/collection/1415286/-colombian-andes-by-gravel-bike
Solo & Unsupported Fastpacking the Canadian Rockies by Jenny Tough
Просмотров 28 тыс.2 года назад
In my global project to run solo and unsupported across a mountain range on every continent, I went back to the Canadian Rockies where I grew up to attempt my fifth journey. The route was nearly 1000km of incredibly remote backcountry, and I carried everything I needed in my 30L Trailblazer backpack, resupplying every 4-6 days in small towns en route.

Suncoaster Overnighter - Bikepacking the Sunshine Coast
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
It wasn't the biggest ride of my life by any means, but it looked like the last chance of the year before the winter weather truly descended, and new restrictions came into effect, so I grabbed my bike and went out for an overnight bikepacking ride on the Sunshine Coast. The morning greeted me with frost and, with three pairs of socks still not feeling like enough, I pedalled back to the ferry ...
How I Pack for Fastpacking
Просмотров 38 тыс.3 года назад
Fastpacking is like the ultimate freedom - by going fast and light, the possibilities are expanded, and movement is fun. I recently fastpacked 950km in 23 days across the Canadian Rockies - my 5th mountain range in my long-term project to run solo and unsupported across a mountain range on every continent. Here's everything that I took, and some of my thoughts on packing! Any questions please l...
Adventure From the Front Door: Bikepacking Vancouver Island (by Jenny Tough)
Просмотров 41 тыс.4 года назад
There’s no place like home. Over the past decade, I’ve created a life of adventure and thrived on travelling to faraway places, exploring different cultures and climates. But… This year, things are different. This year is the year to adventure from your front door. I wanted to create a route that would take me around the best of Vancouver Island - from the front door and back again. Adventure h...
Packing for Bikepacking - My kit setup
Просмотров 32 тыс.4 года назад
This is how I pack my bike for bikepacking *usually*. Filmed mid-trip on Vancouver Island with my Shand Stooshie. I did this kit video now because a trip in remote Canada is pretty much the most I would ever pack on a bikepacking trip - with weather, remoteness, and wildlife concerns, a ride out here needs everything! Most places I bikepack I wouldn't use a tent or bear spray, or even a cooking...
Go Solo - You've Got This (Bikepacking Nepal by Jenny Tough)
Просмотров 145 тыс.4 года назад
Travelling solo is an incredibly rewarding experience, but it can be scary to start. I did my first solo bike adventure when I was 21, and while I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and broke down (physically, mechanically, emotionally, etc.) a lot, it was one of the most important growth experiences of my adult life. This December I went to the Nepalese Himalayas on my Shand Bahookie for ...
On My Own Terms - Fastpacking the Southern Alps (by Jenny Tough)
Просмотров 35 тыс.5 лет назад
It’s not a race, not part of any known challenge, it’s just a goal I’ve set for myself, on my own terms. The Southern Alps were my fourth mountain range in my personal challenge to fastpack across a mountain range on every continent. It’s a totally pointless mission, important only to me, but I still push myself hard every day to do the best that I can do, and succeed on my own terms. Video by ...
Bivvy Night in the Cairngorms
Просмотров 9 тыс.5 лет назад
Type 1 Fun! A Monday night saw me heading up into the mountains for a hike, bagging five munros before sunset and then sleeping on the fifth one. I’ve slept in and around many mountains in my life, but it’s pretty rare to get the chance to sleep on top. It was magical. Up early for a sunrise coffee, then trekked back down to the carpark on time to start my day, like a regular person but with gr...
El Miedo (The Fear) - Solo Running Expedition Across the Bolivian Andes (by Jenny Tough)

    Noticed no cook stove, which does add some weight. how did you get on with food? Just snacks? BTW congrats on your time. Also did your waterproof trousers taper so they wouldn't catch in the chain ring?

    • @JennyTough_
      @JennyTough_ Месяц назад

      Definitely not cooking during a race! I had a few hot meals along the course, as there are pretty constant resupply options in the route. Between those I carried snacks and cold sandwiches.

      @@JennyTough_ OK thanks for the reply. I'm hoping to do it later in the year and as I have coeliac disease, so no gluten, makes it not so easy to do the food on such a light strategy. So thanks for the info. BTW how did your waterproof trousers go? My issue is keeping them out of the chain ring. Might just use rubber bands. We're yours tapered at the ankles? Thanks again.

      If I did the route again I would try it on my full-suss with a dropper post. I was glad to have a much lighter weight bike for the race, as I'm so much faster climbing on it, but I think a lot of the riding would be more fun with a proper MTB!

    What was your sleep schedule like over the 5 days? What lighting and power would you have used without the dynamo?

    • @JennyTough_
      @JennyTough_ Месяц назад

      It's only dark out for 3-4 hours a night, so that dictated my sleep! Aside from the last night, when I did not sleep at all, I tried to get 3 hours. If I hadn't used the dynamo I would have just taken a couple of external battery packs. My head-mounted light is my primary anyway, so it wouldn't have changed much to be without the dynamo. Really, if I didn't already have one, I wouldn't have missed it! Not necessary at all on that slow moving terrain.

    Thank you for sharing this! Is this the 4 litre Apidura frame bag?

  • @benmoulam6889
    @benmoulam6889 2 месяца назад

    Hi Jenny - you said you waterproofed your backback? Isn't the main compartment fully WP out of the box then? Also, I recently found that downtube bag lets in water (where the strap wraps through the lining) - feedback for your contacts at Apidura!

    • @JennyTough_
      @JennyTough_ Месяц назад

      I believe it is waterproof, but mine has seen a lot of use and I had put it through the washing machine a few times, so I nikwaxed it again for peace of mind. It worked! I didn't have any troubles with water inside my downtube bag - you definitely have to fold it 3x (so not overstuffed). If your bag is faulty definitely let Apidura know as they do free repairs!

    How much water capacity did you have? I see a 1 liter bottle. Also who makes the pack you rode in?

    • @JennyTough_
      @JennyTough_ Месяц назад

      Just the 1L bottle - there isn't a moment in the Highlands where you aren't close to a water source, so I never went thirsty! The pack is Apidura :)

    I didn’t catch the bit about the tires. I don’t like tubeless, is there a better option to avoid punctures? There’s not much content on RUclips about this race, would be great to see a wee video up the highs and lows. Thanks for sharing Jenny.

    • @JennyTough_

      Thanks G! I would definitely not ride this terrain with tubes. I used inserts in addition to sealant - yes, it's a huge ordeal to get them set up, but no punctures!
